Pre – Season Boat Check
GENERAL
- Do a general cleaning of hull, deck, and topsides using a mild detergent.
- Ensure drains and sinks are clear.
- Apply a coat of wax to protect surfaces.
- Clean and polish metal surfaces with a good metal polish.
- Clean teak wood and apply oil if needed.
- Clean windows, hatches, canvas, bimini, and dodger.
- Thoroughly clean interior including bilges.
- Check spare parts and tools; replace as necessary.
- Ensure registration is current and onboard.
- Check and replace wiper blades if necessary.
HULL
- Inspect hull for abrasions, scratches, gouges, etc.; make repairs as needed.
- Check and replace zincs.
- Address any blisters and refinish if necessary.
- Inspect and maintain rub rails.
- Check swim platform and/or ladder.
- Inspect and test trim tabs.
- Check shaft, cutlass bearing, strut, and propeller.
- Inspect rudder and fittings.
- Touch up or apply antifouling paint as needed.
DECK, FITTINGS, SAFETY EQUIPMENT
- Check stanchions, pulpits, and lifelines for integrity.
- Inspect ground tackle, lines, and fenders.
- Examine chainplates and cleats.
- Check hull/deck joint.
- Inspect deck, windows, and port lights for leaks.
- Lubricate and test anchor windlass.
- Clean and grease winches.
- Check and lubricate blocks, pad eyes, etc.
- Inspect dinghy and life raft.
BELOW DECKS
- Test and lubricate seacocks.
- Inspect condition of hoses and clamps.
- Ensure below waterline hoses are double clamped.
- Test bilge pumps (automatic and manual).
- Check bilges for oil.
- Ensure limber holes are clear of debris.
- Lubricate stuffing boxes, shaft, and rudder logs.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND COMPONENTS
- Check battery water level (if applicable).
- Charge or replace batteries as needed.
- Clean and lubricate battery terminals.
- Verify bonding system integrity.
- Inspect wiring for wear and chafe.
- Test operability of all gauges.
- Verify shore power and charger functionality.
- Ensure spare fuses are available.
- Test and replace bulbs in all lighting fixtures.
- Check electronics for proper operation.
- Inspect antennas for damage.
REQUIRED AND RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT
- Ensure a sound signaling device is onboard.
- Check distress signals for expiration dates.
- Inspect Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs).
- Check life rings and cushions.
- Verify fire extinguishers and recharge if necessary.
- Calibrate and adjust compass.
- Test navigation lights.
- Update charts as needed.
- Check radar reflector.
- Replenish first aid supplies.
- Ensure bailer and hand pump are operational.
INBOARD ENGINE(S)
- Change oil and filters; keep spare onboard.
- Check and replace fuel filters; keep spares onboard.
- Replace engine zincs as required.
- Check and change coolant in cooling system; keep extra onboard.
