The effectiveness of correctly installed lightning protection systems has long been proven; however, regrettably such devices are not yet standard on boats and yachts. But owners can act. Specialist companies offer several possibilities of averting or at least reducing the devastating effects of a lightning strike; these possibilities are described briefly below.

According to the law 4926/2022, all pleasure boats and tourist commercial vessels of < 300 GT are required to have a minimum third party liability cover for bodily injury or death, property damage and marine pollution caused by collision, collision, wreck or any other cause constituting a maritime accident.

In addition to a detailed inspection of the rig before or after the season, in-between checks are just as important for ensuring safety on board.

If the engine suddenly breaks down or after a long period of standing, cannot be started, the cause is often diffcult to fathom, with many owners unsure of what they are dealing with.
